On our way back from North Carolina, we decided to stop halfway to split up driving for Adelyn. As we were looking at different places to stop along the way, we discovered the small town of Cass, West Virginia. It had a steam engine locomotive that I really wanted to go on so Travis agreed to stopping there even though it was a little out of the way.
Once we got to West Virginia it felt like we drove on windy back roads the whole way. It was beautiful, but got tiring after a while. Rather, my stomach started to turn. I felt like we were never going to get to Cass, much less any sort of civilization!
This is what the whole ride looked like!
I was surprised as we drove into Cass. I expected a little town based off of what I read on the website. It literally had one inn, one lodge that had a small grill, a general store, a couple cabins and the train station. That was it! No hotel, gas station, diners, or stoplight! That is when I started praying that there would be a room available somewhere! Adelyn had begun crying at this point and I was exhausted!
We drove up to this tiny inn and luckily there was a room left. Travis said it looked a bit sketchy, but I didn't care at that point. I just wanted to be assured that we had a place to stay.
It was a home that had been turned into an inn 6 months ago. Our room was big enough to fit a double bed and it had a tiny bathroom. Once we got in the room, we realized that our door wouldn't even latch! Travis was so stressed out at that point that he expressed that he wouldn't be able to sleep that night. I asked him how it was different than camping where anyone could come up and unzip your tent but he insisted that it was different.
After laying down in bed, with Adelyn in between us, Travis jumped up and said he had an idea. He moved the dresser in front of the door and checked to make sure all the windows were locked. Then he was able to fall asleep. I couldn't stop laughing!
The next morning we got up and explored the 2 stores in town before going on the train ride. The train took us up to the second tallest point in West Virginia. The guide told us all sorts of interesting information about the history of the train and tracks.
I enjoyed the ride and I am glad we did it, but I don't know if it is something that we will do again anytime soon. I guess that Travis has influenced me because now I love doing more active and crazy things rather than sitting and watching. We did meet some really nice people that told us more about things you can do around the area that are more up our alley.
Travis and Adelyn going in to get our tickets.
At the station, there was a train that you could go on and explore.
Waiting at the station!
Keeping Adelyn out of the sun and away from the smoke.
On the train!
Passing another train on the switchbacks.
Watchtower at the highest point.
The view from the second highest point in West Virginia. The weather was absolutely gorgeous! I couldn't get over the blue sky, fluffy clouds and green trees! It really was breathtaking! I think the earth is one of God's greatest creations!
Beautiful colors! I could just stare at the scenery all day!
We discovered this beautiful river as we began the rest of the journey home.
West Virginia is a beautiful place to see! We would love to go back and go camping/hiking/canoeing/biking sometime!
